Stone 7, South-West Quadrant, Avebury Henge - (September 2022)

Terence Meaden found this wonderful head before I did, he has a photograph of it among the colour plates facing p72 in his "Secrets" book. My own take is that the eye appears to be either inlaid artificially, or else was an existing geological inclusion that was worked around to make the face. On the large version of this photo you can see that the eye has been worked, apparently jabbed with a sharp pointed instrument leaving the effect of multiple facets. The face is framed by a long distinctive S shaped contour probably delineating the edge of a cap or hood, there are other similarly adorned faces at Avebury, click here for details.
