This astounding carving, at least 56 centuries old, of a left profiled male head deserves to be better known. Very difficult to photograph well, partly due to the very low contrast between the carving's lower face and the oolite wall next to it. I believe this face is the precursor to all the block faces displayed on monoliths all over Avebury Henge and the Avenue. Arguably the clearest example is this one here. There are in fact two faces carved onto Stone 21 West Kennet Long Barrow, for details of the other click here |
