Stone 01, Southern Entrance, South-East Quadrant (January 2017)

In the neolithic as you approached Avebury stone circle from the south you were confronted by two very large entrance stones, one of which is Stone 1 above. This image was made from just inside the stone circle, to see it you would have had to have turned your head to the left and glanced back just after having passed through the entrance.   The stone appears to me strongly reminiscent of an enormous beast guarding the entrance.   Against what?   Or was it keeping an eye on the stars/moon/sun to the south-east?
