"In this increasingly complex society the family retained its individuality through its territory and the long barrow where (their) ancestors rested.   The mounds were more than homes of the dead.   Their presence announced that the land had been claimed and the conspicuous setting of many may have been intended for this purpose, located not at the centre but in the upland areas of the land where they might most easily be seen.   Within them the spirits of the dead could be reached and could help the living converse with the Other-World whose terrors reached to every part of the universe"  ~ Aubrey Burl "Prehistoric Avebury" p100
